9/12/2023 0 Comments Bartender classes in dc![]() You absolutely can't expect to just walk into the best bars and start tending, but attitude means a hell of a lot in this industry. Some bars may be more strict than others about how quickly you get onto the bar but ultimately you have to show that you want to do it, that you will graft, and that you're learning at home and listening to people. Alternatively I've had people come to me who want to bartend, but don't much want to work and just do the bar minimum. I've had guys join my team that have come in like a sponge, eager to learn in their own time, and have progressed with me very quickly. This is mostly on you and your work ethic and ability to learn. So work your ass off and you'll be rewarded, but I wouldn't expect to rush into being a bartender. Barbacking teaches you all the hard parts of bartending. (for reference I think they were asking 5+ years of experience for new bartender hires).īartending is a very intense job and a lot of it (perhaps most of it) doesn't have to do with making cocktails. Lots of my coworkers have received internal promotions, so it's not a culture problem-they just have very high standards and they didn't think anyone was ready to promote. (I think he started in February, and they hired a new bartender recently rather than promote internally). I've been barbacking part time at a hotel bar for 8 months now one of the full-time barbacks is getting training from the bartenders and I think he'll be promoted within a year of working so long as there's an opening. At some places 3 months to promote might be doable. Managers are, in my opinion (if you couldn’t tell) the god damn worst part of this industry. job for a month and then we’ll promote you” and they won’t put it in writing, tell them to fuck off. Oh, and if you’re applying and they give you the typical run around of “do X b.s. I worked at a high end place, not a craft cocktail spot per se, but 70% of what I sold was vodka sodas anyway. Managers hate giving people a chance at a better position, because then they’ll need to find a new bar back. Learn how to make basic cocktails and how to use a shaker right at your current spot, and then lie, lie, lie until you get the job. Work in a decent place where they make good drinks, absorb as much as you can from the bartenders, and if your managers won’t give you a chance, then go apply somewhere else and tell them you have experience. (They like you if you keep their ice full and their dish pot empty) Depends on the spot and whether the bartenders like you. Maybe a bartender doesn’t show up or maybe he just needs help and you know enough to be able to hop in and sling beers or something. If you’re asking how long it’ll take, the answer is fuck knows. Like everyone else will tell you, you gotta bar back or wait tables and wait for someone to give you a chance. All those classes are worthless and there’s plenty of bartenders that will throw your resume in the trash if they see you took a mixology class.
