The Tanabata festivals held in Japan today trace their roots back to a popular palace event known as “ Kikoden” – thought to have been introduced from China by Yamanoue no Okura and others who acted as Japanese envoys to the Tang Dynasty in China during the Nara period – coupled with the ancient Japanese “ Tanabata-tsume” festival, based on Japanese mythology about Orihime (the star Vega) and Hikoboshi (the star Altair) in the Milky Way. There are many love stories about Orihime and Hikoboshi in the eighth-century poetry anthology known as the Manyoshu (A Collection of Myriad Leaves), and most Japanese people are well acquainted with Tanabata. The Tanabata festival’s origins date from the Nara period, to a popular festival at Heijokyu (Nara Palace) held on the 7th day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar (now in August).
